Strong Partnership with TTN First Nation enabled this successful project, connecting the final home on-reserve.

Cochrane, ON (October 19, 2021) – Cochrane Telecom Services Inc. (CochraneTel) and the Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN) are proud to announce the completion of the final phase of the fibre-to-the-home and premise (FTTH/FTTP) network, within the Taykwa Tagamou Nation territory. With the fibre-to-the-premise project now complete, the Northern Ontario on-reserve Cree community has access to fast, reliable high-speed Internet. Over 300 IPTV channels are being delivered to homes and businesses within the community.

The Chief and Council of TTN had announced to their membership that they would be prioritizing this investment to improve the quality of their community’s internet, an issue many First Nations communities face. This priority was accelerated due to COVID-19, where the Chief and Council took ambitious measures to ensure the safety of their community members at the same time completing the fibre project for the community.

“This project was important because our community members needed access to high-speed internet, so that our staff and members were able to work from home and children were able to attend online classes,” said Derek Archibald, Deputy Chief, TTN. “With our high-speed internet connection, our community’s participation within the education system and economy was not interrupted. This is important to our community, as we believe strongly in our ability to be true contributors to the economy writ-large,” he added.

Dr. Kalai S. Kalaichelvan, Chairman, CochraneTel said, “CochraneTel has always valued its relationship with TTN. We are proud to have completed this fibre network build for the residents and businesses on the reserve. Their high-speed access has also allowed us to begin deployment of IPTV and a fully managed IP phone system that will link the businesses within the community.”

“No matter how uncertain the future is with the continuing waves of COVID-19, we know our people can prosper,” continued Chief Bruce Archibald, TTN. “With our enhanced health measures and increased access to high-speed internet, we are able to provide our membership with live safety updates in real-time. With our ambitious safety measures and infrastructure built to match, we have kept COVID-19 out of our community – without a single case to date. We were able to make a positive impact on the health, safety, and financial security of our people,” he concluded.
